Cowboys and Robots

Here's some quick sketches for series of concept paintings I'll be doing. I'm thinking of keeping things to a theme so I have some context to what I do. This week is cowboys and robots, not sure why..... just because. Trying to incorporate more color into my stuff since I've been working mostly B&W with layer of color on top which feels limiting.

Was nice to see everyone at Anomaly '10 event last week, thanks to all the artists who gave me feedback. Craig Mullins was great, lots to think about for sure....Hmmmmm

Well here it is. Not quite what I initially visualized in my head but this has it's own appeal I suppose. I treated the W.I.P picture more as a concept of what I was going for and reworked things a bit for more darker palette.

Here's the early stage of lineart and blocking in light and shadow. This is where grid line comes in real handy for keeping things in perspective

From here I would use the color balance layer to get the general color scheme I'm looking for. The whole thing came together relatively quick because I kept things loose without trying to render every little detail which would've taken forever.

Then comes the fun part of scouring the internet for neon signs and other random bits, tweaking the colors, re-tweaking, and adding textures.

And there you have it. Go Canada Go!

in the meantime I had a chance to attend the 'Anomaly' CG movement workshop in Vancouver. It featured local artists working in the industry doing demonstration and keynotes. Check out the website with list of artists HERE

Not a bad turnout at the event and hopefully next year it will be bigger and better

In case the few of you that come here was wondering why I've been quiet for the past few days, I was enjoying myself in Las Vegas over the long weekend XD (yea, one would think I'd mention something like that)

No I did not marry a hooker while intoxicated

No I did not become a millionare unfortunately. I think altogether I was set back 20 bucks in U.S dollars, which is not too bad. I certainly could have done much worse.

It was actually a very inspiring place to be as an artist, which was surprising to me. If the sheer scale and grandness of things that they've built over there won't do it for ya, at least the endless stream of hot girls in skimpy dresses will ;)

Not sure why I took picture of that old rag as soon as I got back. I reached for a shirt in my drawer and that's the one I grabbed. Brings back memories (some pleasant some not so pleasant)

Thankfully for those looking at it from their computer can't tell how dirty and smelly it has gotten over the years

I'm kinda cheating by uploading these because they're old stuff from last year but since I got nothing today I will....also because not many has seen them

If I remember correctly the theme last year was to design fantasy-magical warrior character who uses elemental powers....or something like that. I choose to go with a dino-warrior idea because I happened to know a friend at school who's obsessed with dinosaurs. These were concept sketches leading up to the final painting but for some reason I like these more than the final image
I will probably be doing stuff for this year's Dominance war as well.
